I am an idiot. In this big software application I wrote for work, they brought in all the temps and did all this work, then a few hours into they realized all the dates were wrong.

After further investigation I came to the realization that September is NOT the 10th month of the year. I always thought it was.. hmm wierd..

It's amazing how one small mistake like that can screw everything up and make my day miserable.

Mozilla Incorporates

It seems that Mozilla once again perpetuated it's reputation for not being open with the Mozilla community, and not promoting participation. Today the Mozilla Foundation announced that a Mozilla Corporation has been formed. This might not be necessarily bad, but they did not consult with the community about this at all. They simply announce one day that they are going to do it.

Here is a breif list of actions taken by Mozilla without any kind of attention community feedback or participation:

------
* Formation of the Mozilla Foundation - The public was not warned nor consulted about this.

* The early release of Thunderbird and Firefox 1.0 before all MAJOR bugs had been fixed - They pushed the release of both products despite many well known bugs.

* Constant obfuscation of severe bugs in Bugzilla

* Adding a number of major online Web services to the Search Bar in exchange for undisclosed profits - Why did they not even give the option to remove these? What happened to choice?

* Using Google as the standard URL keyword engine - Why was the community not consulted about this, and furthermore, there is no option (except for in about:config) to change this.

* Providing no easy way to find how much money has been donated by various organizations and how that money was spent. One such organization being Google, who allegedly has given upward in the millions.
-----

So what about all the thousands of people who have donated time and money to Mozilla. They are all just left in the dark about all these major decisions? Also, I would like to know how much exactly the Mozilla Corp Board of Directors and the Mozilla Foundation Board of Directors make. This kind of information should be made available to the community, since afterall, Mozilla was built on the backs of the community.

Mozilla Suite, Phoenix, and Firebird all did quite well without big corporate interests. Not that I am against major corporate support, but Mozilla already doesn't have a good reputation for transparency and participation. I just suspect this will get worse.

I recently switched to Mac OS X. As a web developer, one of the biggest hurdles I had was finding adequate development software.

Here is a comparison of my old Windows software and my new OSX software. These are, in my opinion the BEST applications availabile for their platforms. I have done a LOT of searching and tried just about every app out there, and these seemed to really stick on me the best.

---------------
Word Processing
---------------
##OSX & This is the killer
for JEdit.

skEdit is great for HTML work, but not PHP. It is much better than BBEDit, TextMate, or SubEthaEdit, but it is in no way as good
as HomeSite for Windows.

OSX is also lacking in a decent FTP client. While Transmit is decent, it is light years slower than FileZilla.

So the Real ID act passed. What does this mean?

In 3 years, you will have to have a National ID card. You will most likely have to use it to purchase many things -- certainly anything involving travel and anything purchased on credit.

This excerpt from the Real ID act is scary:

SEC. 102. WAIVER OF LAWS NECESSARY FOR IMPROVEMENT OF BARRIERS AT BORDERS.
Section 102(c) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (8 U.S.C. 1103 note) is amended to read as follows:

(c) Waiver-

(1) IN GENERAL- Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall have the authority to waive, and shall waive, all laws such Secretary, in such Secretary's sole discretion, determines necessary to ensure expeditious construction of the barriers and roads under this section.

(2) NO JUDICIAL REVIEW- Notwithstanding any other provision of law (statutory or nonstatutory), no court shall have jurisdiction--

...

Holy Crap!? Maybe I am reading this wrong, but this is essentially saying that the Department of Homeland Security can have NO accountabilty to the US judicial system. This is out and out blatantly removing any kind of checks and balances. It also appears to be saying that the Department of Homeland security can waive or by-pass any laws which they feel is hindering them from doing their job.

Hello People!!
